Celebrating God's Faithfulness for 175 Years
We will celebrate our 175th church anniversary on Sunday, October 19, at the morning worship service with preaching by Rev. Cleatus Blackmon and music lead by Tony Serrao. We will gather for lunch in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. The church will provide chicken, rolls, and tea. Please bring side dishes and dessert. All current and former choir or senior adult choir members are invited to help us fill the choir on that day. We will not wear robes. We will practice with Tony on Wednesday, October 15, at 8:00 pm.
Church history trivia with answers:
1. When Pleasant Grove was founded in 1833, services were held once a month. What year did the church begin having services every Sunday morning?  1937
2. In 1933, the church sexton was paid $1 per month. What were his job responsibilities?  The sexton looked after the property and tolled the cast-iron church bell.
3. Which did the church get first, a telephone or an inside baptistery?  A telephone was installed (in the parsonage) in 1928.  The first inside baptistery (which was filled by hand) came in 1940.
4. True or False: In 1862, over one third of the members at Pleasant Grove were colored. True.  In 1862 Pleasant Grove had 100 white and 52 colored members.  Colored members established their own churches after the Civil War ended in 1865.

Michael Long called as Minister to Children and Youth
Dear Church Family,
First, I would like to thank you for this opportunity to serve here as Minister to Children and Youth. I take this calling to serve our Lord with much honor and humility. I look forward with great anticipation for what God has in store for our children, youth and entire church family in the days to come. Please continue to pray for our children and youth that God would be ever present in their lives. Also, please pray for me that God would give me wisdom and discernment as I lead and guide these young people in the ways of our Lord. Proverbs 22:6 declares, “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not turn from it”.
In addition, I would like to invite all the youth to Sunday School. We have started a new curriculum called Known. It is a very engaging study that will help you understand what you believe and why you believe it.
For His Glory,
Michael

A Word from the Pastor
One hundred and seventy five years is a long time. As our church celebrates its anniversary, we realize that God’s word has been proclaimed in this community since 1833. Many changes have happened since our church began.  It is hard for our children to realize a world without cars, telephones, etc. Listed to your right are people who have been members of Pleasant Grove for 50 years or longer.  We know this list is incomplete. If your name needs to be on this list, please call Adrianne.
October 19, 2008 will be a day of celebration. Invite your family, former church members and friends to come. This day will be a reminder of our past heritage and our future: “To clearly present the claims of Christ to our community while equipping our people to make a difference where God has placed them”.
Love, Your Pastor
Don's Dabblings
Our Evangelist Team met last Tuesday night and following a delicious meal which featured chicken strips, baked potato, tossed salad, and banana pudding, ministered effectively writing 16 cards and notes, making 1 call, praying for 49 individuals, and making 9 personal visits. Many thanks to Jennifer Donald for the delicious meals she prepares.
Here is another plea for completed CARE Cards. We only received on this past Sunday.
I have always felt that Christian service causes us to grow in so many ways,.
We are always being measured. God sees it all and knows our motives and is measuring us. You better believe that people are measuring us! When it comes to the process of measuring Christian service and servants, other people can make mistakes, and we can make mistakes. Most Christian workers are prone to think either more highly of themselves than they should or less highly.
The Lord is the only One who can accurately measure both us and out work. How does He let us know if we are measuring up? Sometimes He prompts people just to say thanks by way of a letter or a phone call or in person. Sometimes the Lord encourages one with a very special answer to prayer. Sometimes His approval is evidenced by opening new doors or opportunity. The bottom line is this: we should perform our service and not waste too much time measuring ourselves!
Our shut- in for this week beginning Sunday is Joel Elders, 280 Northway Drive, Landrum, SC 29356-8721
