A Word from the Pastor
This Sunday we will begin the process of selecting deacons for the church. Perhaps a brief reminder of the type of man God desires to serve this church will help in our selection.

1 Timothy 3:8-13 lists the qualifications of a Godly deacon, but first lets review the definition of a deacon.

The word deacon means servant which speaks of the duty of a deacon. He is a minister who serves or attends to and cares for the needs of others. It refers to menial service such as a table waiter. This is not a demeaning term, for Christ was the greatest servant.

The type of "servant" that God desires for this church is as follows: (v.8)Sincere men who do not indulge in wine, or seek to make money in dishonest gain. This speaks of his character. He must be a man who speaks truth to all and is trusted in his social life.

A deacon must be able to know spiritual truth and can discern the gospel. From the truth of Scripture, he lives in such a way his conscience does not condemn him. (v.9)

A deacon must be tested in the area of his reputation (v.10). The stress of the ministry will reveal the true self and men who have been tested and found to be Godly are ready for service.

Deacon must have a wife who is as Godly as he. He must be the husband of one wife and must be able to manage his home life before he is servant to the church (vs. 11-12,15).
I urge you now to make this issue of deacon selection a matter of prayer.
Love, Danny

Don's Dabblings
Following some delicious baked potatoes, tossed salad and banana pudding prepared by Lounell Rodd, our Reaching "R" team and Evangelists "E" team combined to write 20 cards and letters, made 3 telephone calls, prayed for 50 individuals, and made 10 personal visits. Many thanks to all who ministered.

VBS is taking center stage this week so CARE will not meet. Our schedule for August is as follows
August 11 "C" and "A" teams
August 25 "R" and "E" teams

Our Bible study in James is a very timely one. James may be the most practical book in the Bible. One of my favorite verses in James is James 1:17: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the
Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow or turning."

Let me comment on the last portion of that verse. One translation of the last portion of that verse says: "there is never the slightest variation or shadow of inconsistency." These words refer to the sun. The sun is a brilliant light, but there is often a variation in its brightness. Shadows are cast on its light by an eclipse or by a cloud.
God does not display such variation and inconsistency. He is dependable and He is consistent. An old country preacher said it like this: "Sometimes I tremble on the rock, but the rock never trembles under me."
